How much does Bupa health insurance cost? 2026 Pricing guide
If you're looking to understand how much Bupa health insurance costs, we’ve broken it down for you. We obtained hundreds of quotes to bring you our extensive Bupa pricing guide so you can see how much you might pay and what influences your Bupa health premium.
How much is Bupa per month in 2026?
Our most recent research found that the average cost of Bupa health insurance is £70.86 per month (£850.32 per year).
Our average Bupa price is based on a typical comprehensive policy, meaning one with outpatient and alternative therapy cover options included, and an entry-level policy. The figures are calculated using Bupa quotes for six age groups across 21 locations, so the cost of your Bupa health insurance policy will differ depending on your personal situation.
We've researched the prices for a new policy, which typically includes a significant no-claims discount. Bupa’s renewal premiums are likely to be higher than those for a new plan.
Here’s our key findings about the cost of Bupa health insurance in 2026:
- The average cost of Bupa Treatment and Care is £59.28 per month, compared with £82.44 per month for Bupa Comprehensive cover.
- Choosing Bupa’s “Guided Care” option typically reduces premiums by around 25% compared with unrestricted consultant access.
- Bupa’s health insurance pricing compares favourably with other insurers. Its prices were below the market average at every age group we surveyed

Many factors will affect the cost of your Bupa private health insurance policy. You'll have control over some of them, such as the level of cover you opt for and the excess you set on the policy, but you won't have control over others, such as where you live or your age.
Here are just some of the factors that will affect the cost of your Bupa insurance:
Factors personal to you
- Your age - health insurance costs more as you age and considerably more as you enter retirement and later life. In line with other insurers Bupa prices tend to rise sharply after you reach 50.
- Where you live - if you live in a major city, the cost of private medical treatments is likely to be higher, so you can expect to pay more for your health insurance. London is the most expensive location for Bupa health insurance; however, we've also seen high premiums in other cities such as Cambridge and Nottingham.
- Your smoker status - insurers recognise that people who smoke are more likely to claim on their policy. Bupa will ask whether you have used any tobacco products in the last two years. If you smoke or use nicotine replacement products, you’ll usually pay around 5% more for your Bupa private health insurance.
- Your health - While Bupa states that your medical history won’t affect the price you pay, those who are fit and healthy may be eligible for a 10% discount when joining (terms apply). See our Bupa discount section for full details.
The Bupa policy choices you make
How you set up your Bupa health insurance plan will also influence the price.
- Cover level - what you want your policy to cover is the most significant factor you have control over. Go for a basic policy, and you'll pay less. “Treatment and Care" is Bupa’s entry-level option and is cheaper because it doesn’t cover any appointments, tests or scans that you may need for a private diagnosis. Bupa Comprehensive provides broader cover including diagnosis, so is more expensive, particularly if you choose higher or unlimited outpatient limits.
- Your excess - the higher your excess, the lower your Bupa premiums will be. However, make sure that it remains affordable, as the last thing you want is a big bill you can't afford when you're unwell.
- Consultant access - Bupa offers two options for medical consultant access. You can opt for its "Guided Care", which limits you to a pre-approved list of consultants that it has favourable terms with, or you can choose unrestricted consultant access. Based on our research, opting for restricted consultant access will typically reduce the cost of your Bupa health insurance policy by 25%.
- Hospital list - some private hospitals charge more than others, especially those in central London, often operated by HCA. If you want to include high-end hospitals, you can expect your premiums to increase. Bupa offers three hospital network choices, with its Essential Access the cheapest and its Extended Choice with Central London the most expensive.
- No-claims discount - Bupa offers a no-claims discount (NCD) that starts at 65% (level 12) for new health insurance policies and moves up or down depending on your claims. Bupa’s maximum no claims discount is 70%.
- The cost of private medical treatment - inflation affects all products and services in the UK, and the cost of private medical treatment is no different. Prices tend to rise, contributing to the year-on-year increase in the cost of private health insurance cover.
How we assessed the cost of Bupa health insurance in 2026
To analyse the cost of Bupa health insurance in 2026, we obtained hundreds of quotes across different age groups, locations and cover levels. We researched both Bupa Treatment and Care and Bupa Comprehensive policies to understand how pricing changes based on personal circumstances and policy choices.
How we configured our example Bupa policies for individuals
To provide meaningful averages, we selected policy terms we believe are typical for people considering health insurance. These terms and, therefore, the prices are just examples. You could opt for more cover options and pay a higher premium, or vice versa.
Here is how our two example Bupa plans were configured:
- Health insurance pricing is based on an individual applying as a new Bupa customer
- Prices are based on quotes from 21 major towns and cities across the UK
- We set the excess of the policy to £250
- The individual was a non-smoker
- Both policies were written using Bupa's Guided Care (restricting consultant access)
- The Comprehensive policy included £1,000 of outpatient cover and cover for therapies
- We opted for Bupa's standard hospital list
- The policy was underwritten on a Moratorium basis
Additional assumptions for Bupa couples and family pricing
For our couples and family pricing examples, we also assumed:
- Adult applicants were the same age
- Children on the policy were aged 12 or under
- Family pricing examples were based on an Oxford postcode

Overall, the average cost of Bupa health insurance is £70.86 per month based on all Bupa plans and age groups. The average monthly cost is £59.28 for Bupa Treatment and Care and £82.44 for Bupa Comprehensive. Across each of these measures, Bupa’s pricing is significantly lower than the market average.
How has the cost of Bupa health insurance changed since 2025?
Our historic pricing data shows that the average price of a Bupa health insurance policy has increased by a fairly modest 1.7% over the last 12 months.
Across the wider market, pricing trends have been mixed. Three health insurers implemented larger increases than Bupa, one made smaller rises and two reduced prices. For comparison, the average cost of a new comprehensive health insurance has increased by around 4% across the market, meaning Bupa’s price growth has been below the industry average.
Your age plays a key role in the cost of your Bupa health insurance; therefore, understanding the prices as you get older is vital.
The table below reveals the average cost of Bupa health insurance in 2026, broken down by policy type and age group:
As you can see, Bupa health insurance is relatively affordable, especially for younger customers. At age 20, both plans cost under £35 per month.
Bupa premiums rise steadily with age across both plans, reflecting higher expected healthcare use. As with most health insurers, the cost of Bupa health insurance accelerates from age 50 onwards.
The price gap between the two Bupa plans also widens with age. At 20, Bupa Comprehensive costs just £7.61 more per month than Bupa Treatment and Care, but by age 70 the difference has grown to £45.83 per month. This price difference reflects the greater outpatient benefits included in Bupa Comprehensive cover.
Our research shows that Bupa Comprehensive remains consistently 30-45% more expensive than Treatment and Care, but the absolute cost difference becomes much larger over time. This is important from an affordability perspective, as what may feel like a modest upgrade at younger ages for choosing Bupa Comprehensive becomes a larger financial commitment in later life.
Bupa offers its best value for money at age 30 for Basic cover, where it is 18.6% cheaper than the market average, and at age 40 for Comprehensive cover, where it is 25.3% cheaper.
Most health insurance providers, including Bupa, charge different private health insurance prices based on where you live in the UK. The primary reason is that private medical treatment costs vary widely around the country, but other factors, such as claim rates, also play a part.
Overall, there is a 53.2% price difference between the most and least expensive postcodes for a Bupa policy, highlighting the significant role location plays in the cost of Bupa cover.
In this section of our guide to Bupa costs, we'll share how prices varied regionally based on the towns and cities we sampled. The figures show the average of all age groups for both a basic and a comprehensive policy. As a reminder, the national average for a Bupa policy is £70.86 per month.
There’s little surprise that London is the most expensive region with an average Bupa health insurance policy price of £88.48 per month, which is 24.9% higher than the Bupa national average. The other regions where Bupa policies cost more than average are East of England (9.3% higher), East Midlands (8.2% higher) and South East (2.2% higher).
The cheapest UK regions for Bupa health insurance are Scotland (£58.99), Northern Ireland (£60.96) and Wales (£62.63).
Looking at the towns and cities that we surveyed, West London has the highest monthly Bupa health insurance premiums at £90.37, followed by South East London (£86.59) and Colchester (£83.56). At the other end of the scale, Edinburgh (£58.99) was the cheapest UK location we surveyed for Bupa health insurance. Belfast (£60.96), Cardiff (£62.63) and Newcastle (£62.81) are also well below the national average Bupa premium.
Our latest pricing data clearly shows that, across all the scenarios we assessed, Bupa’s health insurance is very competitively priced. Indeed, in many cases, Bupa offered the best price among all providers.
Given that Bupa was our top-rated health insurance product in 2026 and has recently been enhanced with some valuable new additional benefits, such as face-to-face GP appointments and a £300 dental allowance per member, you might assume that it is more expensive than its competitors, but this is not the case.
Overall, Bupa’s average monthly health insurance premium of £70.86 is 14.1% lower than the market average of £82.53 based on all seven health insurance providers we surveyed.
But let’s break down Bupa's pricing position against other leading providers for a basic and comprehensive policy. The “Wins" column in the table below means Bupa is cheaper than its rival at that age.
For basic health insurance policy (without outpatient cover) Bupa is cheaper than four of the six other insurers on average across ages 20 to 60. Its pricing beat Aviva and Freedom Health insurance across every age we researched. The largest cost saving for a Bupa basic health insurance policy is against Freedom Health (37.9%), worth around £334 per year, but there are also strong savings versus Aviva (21.3%) and Vitality (13.2%).
Bupa was on average slightly more expensive than Exeter (-1.9%) and WPA (-3.7%), but the differences are small (around £10-£20 per year). Bupa was better priced in two out of five age groups compared to The Exeter, and in three out of five age groups compared to WPA.
Bupa compares even more favourably with other insurers when assessing its comprehensive health insurance pricing. Overall, based on average prices for ages 20 to 60, Bupa offered the lowest premium for comprehensive cover, with savings of between 3.7% to 43.2% compared with other insurers. In monetary terms, that equates to annual savings of between £29 and £587, depending on the provider.
Bupa’s comprehensive policy was more competitively priced than Aviva, Freedom Health and The Exeter for each age group, and cheaper than AXA Health, Vitality and WPA in four of the five ages we analysed.
Like many other providers, Bupa offers a guided consultant option called “Guided Care,” which narrows your choice of specialist to three local options in return for a lower cost. You should note that the guided care option is only available if you buy your Bupa health insurance through a broker; it won’t be an option if you buy direct through Bupa’s website.
Alternatively, you can opt for an unrestricted choice of consultants, but for a higher premium. The table below shows how the cost of Bupa’s guided care option compares with its non-guided option using a standard hospital list (Essential Access).
Choosing Guided Care instead of a non-guided standard hospital list can reduce Bupa health insurance premiums by around 25% on average, whether you choose a basic or comprehensive policy.
How your excess affects the cost of Bupa health insurance
Bupa offers eight different policy excess levels (the amount you pay towards a claim), giving you more choice than most competitors. A higher voluntary excess can help you reduce the cost of your Bupa health insurance to match your budget, so it is worth understanding the savings offered by each excess amount.
As our data shows, selecting a higher excess can make a significant difference to your Bupa health insurance premium. For example, choosing a £250 excess instead of no excess reduces the cost of a Bupa policy by around 15%, while a £500 excess cuts premiums by about 26%.
Opting for the highest excess level of £2,000 almost halves the cost of your cover, although realistically this level will be too high for many people to be comfortable with paying in the event of a claim.
How much does Bupa health insurance cost for couples?
You can add your partner to your Bupa health insurance but this will increase the cost of your policy. Overall, the average cost of Bupa health insurance for a couple is £134.63 per month or £1,615.56 per year. Looking at the two product types offered by Bupa, the average cost of Bupa Treatment and Care for a couple is £112.62 per month, while the average monthly cost of Bupa Comprehensive is £156.64.
The table below shows the price of Bupa private medical insurance for couples of different ages for its Treatment and Care and Comprehensive policies. Please note that couples save 5% when applying together on one policy compared to two individuals taking out their own health insurance policies.

How much does Bupa health insurance cost for a family?
The average cost of Bupa health insurance for a family in 2026 is £149.04 per month, based on our latest pricing research. However, the actual amount you pay will depend on the product and level of cover you choose. The average monthly cost of Bupa Treatment and Care for a family is £125.08 compared with £172.99 for Bupa Comprehensive.
The table below compares Bupa family private health insurance prices with the market average of all the leading health insurers.
As the table shows, Bupa's family health insurance pricing is consistently competitive against the rest of the market. This is especially the case for a comprehensive family policy where the average Bupa price is between 18.4% and 22.7% cheaper.
Bupa’s discounts make its family health insurance particularly competitive
Bupa’s family pricing is helped by the fact that it offers families a 10% discount compared with taking out separate individual policies. In addition, its pricing structure means parents only pay for their eldest child on the policy.
As a result, families with children under 20 typically pay the same premium regardless of how many children are included in the plan. This makes Bupa’s family health insurance especially competitive for larger families.
You can see how Bupa’s family health insurance pricing compares to other insurers in our guide to the cost of family insurance.
How much does Bupa health insurance cost for a family of three?
On average, a family of three will pay £148.46 per month for Bupa health insurance, according to our research. Bupa’s Treatment and Care policy costs around £124.60 per month, while the Comprehensive policy averages £172.31 per month.
The cost of Bupa health insurance for a family of three is largely based on the age of the adults on the policy. The cost of adding a child is relatively nominal, especially once you factor in the 10% family discount.
How much does Bupa health insurance cost for a family of four?
As Bupa only charges for your eldest child, depending on your children's ages, the price of Bupa for a family of four will be the same as that for a family of three. This means that the average cost of Bupa health insurance for a family of four is £148.46 per month.
How much does Bupa health insurance cost for a family of five?
The average monthly cost of Bupa health insurance for a family of five is £150.20. Bupa only charges you for your eldest child, so whether you have three or six children under 20, you should pay the same amount.
Please note that the average price of Bupa health insurance for a family of five is slightly higher than for other household sizes due to the older age of the eldest child (12 compared with 10 in the other scenarios).
What discounts does Bupa offer on its health insurance premiums?
Bupa offers a range of private health insurance discounts for people looking to join them, which can help lower your premiums. They include
5% discount for couples
If two of you apply for a policy together, you'll save 5% compared to getting two individual health insurance policies.
10% discount for families
Families with at least one adult and one child on their health insurance benefit from a 10% discount compared to buying individual policies for each family member. Bupa also offers free cover for additional children. If you add more than one child under 20 to your policy, you’ll only pay for the eldest.
10% discount if you're healthy
Bupa offers what it calls a health and lifestyle discount depending on how you answer three questions about your wellbeing:
- Have you used tobacco products in the past two years?
- Have you had any treatment for prediabetes or diabetes in the past two years?
- Is your body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and 24.9?
The discount is applied individually, so every adult aged 18 or over named on the policy who meets Bupa’s healthy lifestyle criteria receives their own 10% discount.
15% discount for dentists and doctors
Bupa offers a 15% discount on health insurance for dentists, doctors, and their dependents, as long as the medical professional is the primary policyholder.
All of these discounts usually apply to both Bupa's Treatment and Care Health Insurance and Comprehensive plans.
How can I reduce the cost of Bupa private medical insurance?
There are several ways you can reduce the cost of your Bupa health insurance cover. These include:
- Choose Bupa Treatment and Care instead of Bupa Comprehensive
- Increase your excess level
- Select the standard hospital list (Essential Access)
- Opt for Bupa Guided Care which restricts your choice of consultants
- Lower your outpatient cover limit
- Make use of Bupa’s health and lifestyle discount
